マニアック観光地17回目は築地本願寺をご紹介します。東京・日比谷線築地駅のすぐ近くの有名なお寺。お寺というと和風の建築をイメージしますが、築地本願寺はなんと古代インド・アジア仏教様式を模した外観が特徴の珍しい建物。帝国大学名誉教授で建築家の伊東忠太博士の設計によるものです。開門時間内であれば誰でも自由に参拝できる開かれたお寺として知られています。参拝するだけでなく併設されたカフェでは人気の朝ごはんが楽しめたり、パイプオルガンのコンサートが開かれたりと、従来のお寺とは一線を画す楽しみが満載の場所になっています。築地本願寺の見どころをご紹介したいと思います！

インド風建築が魅せる独特の外観
Unique Exterior Showcasing Indian-style Architecture

築地本願寺の本堂は、帝国大学名誉教授で建築家の伊東忠太博士の設計による古代インド・アジア仏教様式を模した外観が特徴です。建物の細部には、インドのみならず和洋中と世界の建築要素が取り入れられています。正面の屋根には菩提樹の葉や蓮の彫刻があしらわれ、ストゥーパと呼ばれる塔もあります。この独特な建築が実現できた背景には、当時の宗主である大谷光瑞の海外文化への深い理解がありました。

The front roof is adorned with carvings of bodhi tree leaves and lotuses, and there's even a stupa-like tower. This unique architecture was made possible due to the deep understanding of foreign cultures held by the then-head of the sect, Kozui Otani.

築地本願寺の境内には、設計者の伊東忠太博士が動物好きだった影響で、13種類の動物像が隠されています。本堂正面の二対の獅子を筆頭に、牛、馬、象、孔雀、猿などさまざまな霊獣が至るところに配置されています。動物の像を設置した意図は現在も謎のままですが、そのかわいい姿は、訪れる人の境内散策の楽しみを増してくれています。動物像は親しみやすいキュートなフォルムで、階段の手すりなどにも！お寺の雰囲気を和ませる役割も果たしているようです。

Within the grounds of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, 13 types of animal statues are hidden, influenced by the animal-loving nature of the designer, Dr. Chuta Ito. Led by the two pairs of lions at the main hall's entrance, various mythical beasts including cows, horses, elephants, peacocks, and monkeys are placed throughout the premises. While the intention behind placing these animal statues remains a mystery to this day, their cute appearances enhance the enjoyment of visitors exploring the temple grounds. The animal statues have an approachable and cute form, appearing even on stair railings! They seem to play a role in softening the atmosphere of the temple.

"Temple × Pipe Organ": A New Vision for Temples

築地本願寺の本堂には、珍しいパイプオルガンが設置されています。1970年に仏教音楽の普及を目的に寄贈されたこのオルガンは、2mから2cmまでの大小約2,000本のパイプで構成され、6つの山は「南無阿弥陀仏」の6文字を表しています。オルガンは法要行事や結婚式で使用されるほか、毎月最終金曜日に行われるランチタイムコンサートでも楽しむことができます。従来のお寺のイメージを覆すパイプオルガンを活かしたコンテンツは、新しい築地本願寺の魅力となっています。

The main hall of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple houses a rare pipe organ. Donated in 1970 to promote Buddhist music, this organ consists of about 2,000 pipes ranging from 2m to 2cm in length, with its six mountain-like structures representing the six characters of "Namu Amida Butsu" (Homage to Amida Buddha). The organ is used during religious ceremonies and weddings, and can also be enjoyed at lunchtime concerts held on the last Friday of every month. This content utilizing the pipe organ, which defies the conventional image of a temple, has become a new attraction of Tsukiji Hongwanji.

築地本願寺の境内には、おしゃれな和カフェ「Tsumugi」があります。ガラス張りの店内からはお寺の景色を眺めながら食事を楽しめます。特に人気なのが数量限定の「18品の朝ごはん」で、16種類のおかずとお粥・お味噌汁が楽しめる贅沢なメニューです。朝ごはんは人気のため事前予約がおすすめです。朝食の他にも和スイーツやパスタなど、お寺にいることを感じられるメニューが用意されています。今回は、てん茶（抹茶の原料）と小麦をブレンドしてつくられた京抹茶の生パスタを注文してみました。朝から夜まで1日楽しめるので観光の合間にぜひ。

Within the grounds of Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple, you'll find the stylish Japanese café "Tsumugi." From its glass-enclosed interior, diners can enjoy their meals while taking in the view of the temple. The most popular item is the limited quantity "18-item breakfast," a luxurious menu featuring 16 side dishes along with rice porridge and miso soup. Due to its popularity, it's recommended to make a reservation for breakfast in advance. Besides breakfast, the café offers various menu items that evoke the temple atmosphere, such as Japanese sweets and pasta. On this occasion, we tried the fresh pasta made with Kyoto matcha, blended with tencha (the raw material for matcha) and wheat. Open from morning till night, it's a perfect spot to visit during your sightseeing tour.

築地本願寺は、「開かれたお寺」を目指しています。その言葉通り、開門時間内であれば誰でも自由に参拝でき、オープンな雰囲気を感じられます。年間約300万人が訪れるそうで、ホームページからも、敷居を下げて多くの人に来てもらいたい、楽しんでもらいたいという気持ちが溢れています。参拝だけでなく、カフェやショップ、パイプオルガン、インド様式の本堂、動物像...多様な楽しみ方ができるのが唯一無二の魅力です。本堂入口の上部にあるステンドグラスの美しさも見どころの一つ。海外からの観光客も多く訪れ、写真や動画を撮影する姿が数多く見られました。銀座からもほど近く、銀ブラがてら歩いてフラッと立ち寄るのもおすすめです。
